Grasslands

The Grasslands is a Human Kingdom province located south of the Northern Frontier. Since the majority of the geography is dominated by rolling hills, fertile plains, river deltas, the Grasslands produces vast amounts of foodstuff and serve as the breadbasket for millions.

Since the founding of the Human Kingdom, the Grasslands has been a source of prosperity and conflict. The native population of tribal races (mostly half-elves, shifters, halflings) have always protested against the so-called occupation of their land by Human Kingdom farmers, hunters, fishermen, and soldiers. They hated how the Human Kingdom established cities, controlled nature through agriculture and domesticated their wildlife. It came to a point where the natives could not tolerate this blatant disrespect and declared war. At first, no one took them serious. A few border skirmishes that a dozen hired men-at-arms could not handle. Then, it got worse. Much worse. The natives started attacking larger settlements like towns and cities in larger numbers. Despite their lack of refined war equipment and organization, the natives were successful in halting all trade and supply routes throughout the Grasslands. While the Human Kingdom attempted to wrestle control of the Grasslands back into their iron grips, the people throughout the rest of the Human Kingdom began to feel the suffering of food shortages. Guerrilla warfare through the use of superior cavalry tactics by the natives forced the Human Kingdom to sue for peace. King Robert and the chieftains of the Grasslands signed a peace treaty that granted the lands to be leased to the Human Kingdom for 99 years. In return for using their fertile lands for agriculture, the Human Kingdom promised the tribes political autonomy, military protection, and economic concessions, such as exemptions from taxation. Since then, the Grasslands natives and the Human Kingdom have co-existed in peace. However, that was for the past 98 years. What will happen when the lease is expired at the end of the 99th year?
